Stereo Correlation & Phase Issues Explained
Why a mix that sounds wide and powerful in your headphones can collapse to almost nothing on a phone speaker — and how to catch it before you release.
You've probably heard the advice "check your mix in mono" without a clear explanation of why it matters. Phase and stereo correlation problems are exactly why: they're issues that can be nearly invisible in stereo, and devastating the moment your track gets summed down to mono — which happens more often than you'd think.
Why mono still matters in 2026
Plenty of real-world playback still sums stereo to mono, or close to it: a single phone speaker, a Bluetooth speaker, club PA systems, TV speakers, and some streaming/broadcast paths. If your low end or lead vocal partially cancels out in mono, your track can lose its punch and clarity on exactly the devices most people are listening on.
What stereo correlation actually measures
Stereo correlation compares your left and right channels and produces a single number from -1 to +1:
-10+1
- +1.0 — perfectly mono. Left and right are identical. Zero width, but zero risk of mono cancellation.
- 0 — left and right are effectively uncorrelated (very wide, or content unique to each side).
- Negative values — left and right are partially or fully out of phase. This is where real problems start: content here can partially or completely cancel when summed to mono.
In practice, a healthy mix usually sits somewhere in the +0.3 to +0.9 range — wide enough to feel spacious, correlated enough to stay solid in mono.
Global correlation vs. localized phase issues
Here's the part that trips people up: a mix can have a perfectly reasonable average correlation across the whole track while still having specific moments — a particular chord, a synth patch, a reverb tail — where phase cancellation is severe. A single global correlation number is an average, and averages hide localized problems.
That's why a more useful analysis looks at phase issues as a percentage of the track's duration where cancellation is actually happening in a given moment, not just one number for the whole song. A track can look "fine" on average and still have a chorus that partially disappears in mono.
What actually causes phase problems
- Stereo widening plugins pushed too hard — most of them work by manipulating phase relationships between channels, and overdoing it is one of the most common causes of mono collapse.
- Mismatched or improperly aligned microphone pairs when recording stereo sources, or multiple mics on the same source.
- Duplicated tracks with a delay or pitch-shift used for "fake" doubling, where the delay time interacts badly with certain frequencies.
- Wide reverbs and stereo delays on low-frequency content — width processing on bass and low-mids is a especially common culprit.
How to fix it
- Check your mix in mono regularly while you work, not just at the end. Most DAWs have a one-click mono fold-down monitoring option.
- Keep low end centered. A very common, very effective rule: apply a mid-side EQ or a mono-maker plugin to sum everything below roughly 100-150Hz to mono, and reserve stereo width for the mid and high end. Bass content rarely benefits from width, and it's the most damaging range to lose in mono.
- Back off aggressive widening plugins on individual elements, especially anything sitting in the low-mid range.
- Check phase alignment when combining multiple mic sources or layered samples — a simple polarity flip can sometimes fix a surprising amount of cancellation.
