What dynamic range actually measures, why "just compress it" is often the wrong instinct, and how to use compression with a specific goal in mind.

Compression is probably the most reached-for tool in mixing — and also one of the most commonly overused. Understanding what dynamic range actually represents makes it much easier to know when compression is solving a real problem, and when it's just flattening the life out of a track.

What dynamic range (crest factor) measures

Dynamic range describes the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a signal. One common way to express it is crest factor — the gap between a signal's peak level and its average (RMS) level, measured in dB. A higher crest factor means bigger swings between loud and quiet moments; a lower crest factor means the signal is more consistently at one level.

Neither is inherently "better" — it depends entirely on the material and the genre. A punchy, transient-rich drum recording naturally has a high crest factor. A hard-limited EDM master intentionally runs a lower one. The problem isn't compression itself — it's compression applied without a specific reason.

What compression is actually for

When compression is the wrong move

Compression is often reached for as a default response to "this doesn't sound powerful enough," when the actual issue is somewhere else entirely — arrangement, balance, or simply that the element needs to be a few dB louder in the mix. Adding compression on top of a balance problem usually just makes the track feel more squashed without actually fixing what was bothering you in the first place.

A useful gut-check: if you're not sure what specific problem you're trying to solve with a compressor, it's worth pausing before you reach for it.

The mastering-stage trap

At the mastering stage specifically, over-compression (and over-limiting) is one of the most common ways a track loses its life. Squeezing every last dB of loudness out of a master by crushing dynamic range down to almost nothing is exactly what fueled the "loudness war" — and with streaming normalization now the norm, that trade-off (less dynamic range for more perceived loudness) often isn't even a real trade anymore, since the loudness gain gets undone at playback anyway. A practical approach

  1. Identify the specific problem first — inconsistency, harsh transients, lack of glue — rather than compressing by default.
  2. Start with gentle settings (low ratio, moderate threshold) and increase only as needed.
  3. A/B against the uncompressed signal, at matched loudness, to judge whether the compression is actually helping or just making things louder (which can trick your ears into thinking it sounds "better").
  4. At the mastering stage, preserve some dynamic range deliberately — it's easier to add more loudness later than to un-crush a mix that's already flat.
