Streaming Loudness Normalization: What Every Producer Needs to Know

Why your track doesn't play back at the loudness you mastered it at — and how to master smart instead of just loud.

You master your track to hit hard. You check it, it sounds massive. You upload it to Spotify — and it sounds quieter than the demo you exported. This isn't a bug, and it isn't your master failing. It's loudness normalization, and understanding it will change how you approach mastering entirely.

What normalization actually does

Every major streaming platform measures your track's integrated LUFS and adjusts its playback gain so it matches the platform's target loudness. If you master louder than the target, the platform simply turns you down. If you master quieter, some platforms turn you up (though usually with a limit on how much boost they'll apply).

The practical result: pushing your master far louder than a platform's target doesn't make it sound louder to the listener. It just means more of your dynamic range gets sacrificed to a limiter, for a loudness gain that gets undone the moment it plays back.

True Peak: the other half of the equation

Loudness isn't the only thing that matters — True Peak does too. Unlike a simple sample peak reading, True Peak accounts for "inter-sample peaks": the reconstructed analog waveform between digital samples can actually exceed what a basic peak meter shows. If your True Peak is too close to 0 dBTP, converting your file to a lossy format (MP3, AAC) for streaming can introduce audible distortion that wasn't present in your WAV master.

Most platforms expect True Peak at or below -1 dBTP, and mastering with a bit of headroom below that (say -1.0 to -1.5 dBTP) is a safe, standard practice.

How to actually master for streaming

  1. Get the mix right before you worry about loudness. Balance, arrangement, and frequency content decisions have far more impact on how a track "hits" than the final loudness number.
  2. Master to a reasonable integrated LUFS for your genre — commonly somewhere in the -14 to -9 range — rather than chasing the loudest possible number.
  3. Keep True Peak at or below -1 dBTP to leave safety margin for lossy encoding.
  4. Don't obsess over matching one platform's exact target. Since every platform normalizes independently, there's no single "correct" number that works identically everywhere — getting into a reasonable range matters more than hitting one exact figure.
  5. Preserve some dynamic range. A track that's already loud but dynamically flat has nowhere to go if a platform's normalization changes in the future — and it usually just sounds more fatiguing to listen to.

The mindset shift

The loudness war made sense in a world of un-normalized playback, where the loudest track on the radio or in a DJ's crate genuinely sounded more impactful. Streaming normalization ended that. Today, the tracks that actually sound the most impactful are usually the ones that used their dynamic range deliberately — quiet verses that make choruses hit harder, not just a wall of consistent loudness from start to finish.
