Before EQ, before compression, before any plugin — the single decision with the biggest impact on how your mix feels is simply how loud each element is relative to everything else.
It's easy to assume a mix that isn't working needs better plugins, a different EQ curve, or a fancier saturation chain. Very often, the actual problem is much simpler: something is too loud, something else is buried, and no amount of processing will fix that until the balance itself is addressed.
Volume balance determines what the listener's ear focuses on. A kick that's too quiet relative to the bass gets swallowed. A lead vocal that's too loud sits unnaturally on top of the instrumental instead of living inside it. Hi-hats that are too bright and too loud fatigue the ear before the chorus even hits.
EQ and compression can shape how an element sounds — but they can't fix the fact that it's simply the wrong loudness relative to the rest of the arrangement. Get the balance right first, and a surprising number of "EQ problems" turn out not to need EQ at all.
Two elements that occupy similar frequency ranges and play at similar times will compete for the listener's attention — this is called masking. The classic example is kick and bass: both live in a similar low-frequency range, and if their levels (and rhythmic pockets) aren't managed relative to each other, one will consistently bury the other, and the low end turns into an undefined rumble instead of two distinct, punchy elements.
This is why professional low-end mixing so often involves sidechain compression between kick and bass — not for a creative "pumping" effect, but purely so each one has a moment to be heard without full-time competition from the other.
What counts as good balance shifts significantly by genre. In trap and hip-hop, the kick/808 is often intentionally one of the most prominent elements in the mix. In pop, the vocal is almost always the loudest, most forward element by a clear margin. In jazz and acoustic music, the kick is often felt more than heard, with snare carrying more of the rhythmic weight. None of these are "wrong" — they're different genre conventions, and judging a trap mix by pop-vocal-forward standards (or vice versa) will lead you astray.
